• What is a Droplet?

AltoSky calls its virtual servers, Droplets; each Droplet that you spin up is a new virtual server for your personal use.

  • Do you offer backups?

AltoSky offers two kinds of backups: snapshots and backups. Snapshots can be done at any time, while automated backups runs every couple of days.

  • Do you host DNS?

Yes — you can set up your site using our domain manager.

  • Do you have an API?

Yes — The API allows you to create and destroy Droplets, as well as replicate all of the Droplet control panel functionality.

  • Do you have a default firewall enabled?

No — but we encourage our users to enable one once their Droplet is setup.

  • Do you provide console access?

We provide console access via VNC through our control panel.

  • What kind of Virtualization do you use?

We use KVM.

  • What kind of Network does AltoSky run on?

All AltoSky physical nodes are connected via gigabit ethernet to switches, which are uplinked to our aggregators and core routers. All core routers are uplinked via 10-gigE uplinks to providers.

  • What processor models does AltoSky run on?

We use server-grade Intel Hexcore processors. To view the clock speed and other details of the CPU on the hypervisor you are assigned, run this command on the command line: cat /proc/cpuinfo

  • Do you offer Windows servers?

No, we do not provide Windows-based servers.

  • Can I get a custom plan of CPU, RAM, or Disk / just increase SSD space?

Droplets are only available in fixed sizes, listed on our Pricing page. This allows us to most effectively distribute Droplets across the platform (as well as bring the most competitive prices to our customers).

However, you can add Block Storage to a Droplet to increase your available disk space. Block Storage is currently available in our New York City (NYC1), San Francisco (SFO2), Frankfurt (FRA1), Singapore (SGP1), and Toronto (TOR1) regions, with more regions planned for 2017: BLR1, AMS3, NYC3, and LON1.

  • Does AltoSky offer "movable" IP addresses for high availability?

AltoSky provides Floating IPs which can be used to prevent having a single point of failure in your infrastructure by redirecting network traffic to a backup Droplet if the primary Droplet is offline. Paired with software like keepalived and HAProxy, Floating IPs allow you to build highly available systems.
